FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — The former Winn-Dixie at the Island Walk Shopping Center on South 14th Street reopened Thursday morning as a new Aldi, drawing early crowds and reshaping grocery options for island residents.
Shoppers began arriving before sunrise for the grand opening, including Fernandina Beach resident Kim Maddox, who said the store’s convenience and pricing will make it part of her regular routine.
“I like Aldi’s a lot,” Maddox said, pointing to both proximity and product quality as key factors. “Pricing is great.”
Maddox, who arrived at 6 a.m. for the 8:45 a.m. opening, said she previously shopped at Winn-Dixie and Harris Teeter, often traveling 15 to 20 minutes for groceries — trips recently complicated by road construction. With Aldi now open closer to home, she expects to rely less on those longer drives and instead split her shopping between Aldi and Publix once the new Publix location opens this fall.
The reopening marks the latest step in Aldi’s expansion across Florida and the Southeast U.S., following its acquisition and conversion of former Winn-Dixie stores as part of broader consolidation in the grocery industry — a transition previously reported by the Observer when the Island Walk location was identified for conversion.
For longtime resident Debra Domkowski, who has lived in Fernandina Beach for 22 years, the new Aldi will fundamentally change how she shops.
“Aldi’s will be my first line. Go to Aldi’s first, get what’s on sale, and then hit up the other stores,” Domkowski said.
Domkowski said she typically shops across multiple grocers — including Winn-Dixie, Publix and occasionally Harris Teeter — depending on where she finds the best deals.
“I go where the sales are,” she said.

She added that crowding at competing stores has been a factor, noting that Harris Teeter was often “very crowded.”
Unlike traditional supermarkets, Aldi operates with a streamlined model designed to keep prices low. The store emphasizes a limited selection of items, a strong focus on private-label brands, and operational efficiencies such as customer bagging and cart deposits.
Company representatives said this approach allows Aldi to offer fewer but more curated options — for example, stocking significantly fewer varieties in a category like crackers compared to larger chains — while maintaining competitive pricing.
The store also reflects Aldi’s European roots, with imported cheeses, chocolates and specialty items complementing domestically sourced products.
The grand opening also attracted visitors from outside the immediate area, including Brian Feliciano, a self-described Aldi enthusiast from Orange Park who attends store openings across the region.
“I’m just a regular customer, or I should say a huge fan,” Feliciano said.
Feliciano said he appreciates Aldi’s produce, meat selection and rotating weekly items, often referred to as “Aldi Finds.”
The conversion of the Winn-Dixie site into Aldi at Island Walk represents a continued shift in Fernandina Beach’s grocery market along the South 14th Street corridor. With a new Publix also planned nearby, residents are expected to see increased competition — and potentially lower prices.
For Domkowski and others, the addition is a welcome one.
“Good prices, good prices, and good products,” she said.
As the store begins full operations, residents said the biggest change may be fewer long drives for groceries and more options close to home.
“We need it in our town,” Domkowski added.
