ALDI Opens in Fernandina Beach April 2

Fernandina Beach — ALDI announced Monday it will open its new Fernandina Beach grocery store this Thursday, April 2, marking the company’s latest conversion of a former Winn-Dixie location following its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers assets.

The store, located at 947 Amelia Plaza, will open with an 8:45 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony and feature promotional giveaways planned for early customers, according to the company’s Monday press release.

In the statement, ALDI said the opening is part of its broader strategy to expand access to low-cost groceries in the Southeast United States.

“We're bringing more people a high-quality grocery they want and need at the lowest possible price,” said J.R. Perry, regional vice president for ALDI in the press release.

The company's website said that "on April 2nd the first 200 customers will receive a bag of ALDI goodies. An ALDI employee will hand out a free eco-friendly bag stuffed with ALDI products!"

The Fernandina Beach location is one of several former Winn-Dixie stores being converted to the ALDI format after the company’s 2023 acquisition of Southeastern Grocers’ supermarket portfolio. The strategy allows ALDI to rapidly expand its footprint while replacing traditional full-service grocery layouts with its smaller, efficiency-focused model.

The store will feature ALDI’s core format:

  • A streamlined layout designed for faster shopping

  • A heavy emphasis on private-label products

  • Lower prices driven by reduced staffing and operating costs

The opening relief for Amelia Island shoppers in Fernandina Beach’s grocery landscape since the closing of the Winn-Dixie and nearby Publix stores that funneled residents to Harris Teeter on the south end. That situation was worsened by the closure of a section of Amelia Island Parkway last week funneling traffic to Fletcher Avenue and causing major delays.

ALDI’s entry is expected to increase price competition in the local market while offering an alternative to traditional supermarkets.
